After the war against LTTE was over in 2009 Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had developed relationships with notorious businessmen and friends and soon became well to do, whilst keeping his US citizenship he had obtained
‘Gota’s War’ had been authored by C.A. Chandraprema and published in 2012. In that Book the Author states that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who later became Secretary, Ministry of Defence, as a brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, had retired from the Army in 1990. The Author quotes Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to have stated that “A lot of good officers left the war because they thought the way the war was conducted was an exercise in futility”. In fact Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had fled the war out of sheer fear a cowardly act for an Army Officer. Thereafter Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had departed to the United States of America taking up residence in Los Angeles, and had managed a 7-Eleven Store in Los Angeles. During these years he had led a simple lowly life as those in Los Angeles knew very well at that time.
But after his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa became President of Sri Lanka in 2005, after a passage of 14 years, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who ran away from the Army as a coward had gone back to Sri Lanka. His brother Mahinda Rajapaksa who was then President of Sri Lanka, appointed Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the Secretary, Ministry of Defence of Sri Lanka. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who was in charge of the administration co-ordinated the strategic war fought by the courageous Army Commander, Navy Commander and Air Force Commander, who jointly crushed and destroyed the terrorist organization in May 2009 of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE).
General Sarath Fonseka, who had been praised as the best Army Commander in whole of Asia had retired and contested President Mahinda Rajapaksa, brother of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, as the common candidate for Sri Lanka Presidency sponsored by Ranil Wickremesinghe of the United National Party (UNP) at the Presidential Election in January 2010. General Sarath Fonseka’s Co-ordinating Secretary had been an Army intelligence officer, of the former courageous and fearless State Minister of Defence, Ranjan Wijeratne, who was assassinated by a powerful terrorist bomb in 1991. Ranjan Wijeratne had successfully waged the war to crush the Janatha Vimukthi Peremuna (JVP) insurgency which killed many Sri Lankans in 1989 violating all norms of human rights. Ranjan Wijeratne had been a descendant of the family of the wife of D.S. Senanayake, who had been the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
This Co-ordinating Secretary of General Sarath Fonseka, had been taken into custody and persecuted after the Presidential Election of January 2010, which it is claimed had been actually won by General Sarath Fonseka, who had been held in forced captivity at a leading 5 Star Hotel in Colombo by 5 Divisions of the Army on the directions of Secretary, Ministry of Defence Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, during the whole night that the Presidential Election votes had been counted. The counting of votes is alleged to have been thus fixed. On such ground alone the Supreme Court could have allowed the Election Petition of General Sarath Fonseka ordering a re-count of the votes or annulling the Election, as he had been forcefully prevented from supervising his own vote count by Armed Forces deployed by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as Secretary, Ministry of Defence. After the Election results had been announced large crowds had come on to the streets to shout that they had voted for General Sarath Fonseka. Pre-election surveys by inelegance units had shown that General Sarath Fonseka was leading by 53%.
Co-ordinating Secretary of General Sarath Fonseka who had previously been an inelegance officer of State Minister of Defence, Ranjan Wijeratne had disclosed to several persons, as to how Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had run away from the Army in 1990. These facts are quite different to what the Author C.A. Chandraprema has stated in the Book ‘Gota’s War’. Prior to running away from the war Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had been a Lieutenant Colonel in charge of the Gajaba Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army, and had been stationed in Vavuniya. After the Presidential Election of 2010 General Sarath Fonseka had been imprisoned after the war by a fast track tribunal on alleged frivolous grounds of conflict of interest. On the otherhand, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had been totally indifferent to human rights violations alleged by the international community.
According to facts revealed of 1990 then Lieutenant Colonel Gotabhaya Rajapaksa of the Army had been advancing, with two Army Majors, Chitra Punchihewa and Angelo Peiris, and their Battalions, to the Army Camp at Elephant Pass, at a very narrow stretch of land accessing the northern Jaffna peninsula. This important Army Camp at Elephant Pass had come under heavy attack at that time by the LTTE, and which Army Group had been finally over run by the LTTE forces. Hasalaka Gamini a very brave Corporal of the Sri Lanka Army had driven a lorry load of explosives into this Army Camp on a suicide mission to try and prevent the LTTE attack and today Hasalaka Gamini is hailed as a hero in Sri Lanka.
On the other hand according to the Co-ordihnating Secretary of General Sarath Fonseka and intelligence officer of State Minister of Defence, Ranjan Wijeratne, then Lieutenant Colonel Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had retreated from advancing to the Elephant Pass Army Camp, when the two Army Majors, Chitra Punchihewa and Angelo Peiris had got attacked and been killed by the LTTE forces. As a result the coward Gotabhaya Rajapakshe had retreated back to Vauniya stating that it was due to battle fatigueness and demoralization as per the Book ‘Gota’s War’.
It had been during the period of Ranjan Wijeratne, as State Minister of Defence, that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had so abandoned the war front, and subsequently left the Armed Forces, giving up his commission and rank, as a ‘Lieutenant Colonel’. ‘Gota’s War’ Book discloses – ‘On Minister Ranjan Wijeratne’s orders, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had been posted to the Kotelawela Defence Academy as the Deputy Commandant’. A close confidante of Anura Bandaranaike had disclosed that Anura Bandaranaike had intervened through his mother, former Prime Minister Sirima Dias Bandaranaike, regarding Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s being permitted to retire from the Army on medical grounds which documents have later been destroyed today.
For a short while before proceeding to the United States of America, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had been working with the Pepsi Cola Stores of the Maharajah Organisation. According to those who knew him in Los Angeles, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had been a vegetarian and devotee of Sri Shirdi Baba and had been in the habit of feeding the poor. In 2009 Sirasa Television Station of the Maharajah Organisation had been completely destroyed by an armed attack, but Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa did not probe the matter. Other media personnel too had been attacked, with a Case regarding the internationally renowned Journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga’s brutal murder now having been filed in Los Angeles against Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, a US Citizen. One cannot fool all the people all the time.
But after the war against LTTE was over in 2009 Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had developed relationships with notorious businessmen and friends and soon became well to do, whilst keeping his US citizenship he had obtained. His very good friend Sanjev Gunasekera a real estate accountant had built a palacious house of over 10,000 sqft in Los Angeles which had raised questions as to whose funds these had been. The moment Mahinda Rajapakshe was appointed Prime Minister in October 2018 Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s good friend Malraj de Silva who was Consul in Los Angeles had rushed back to Sri Lanka to seek his friend Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s assistance to become the Sri Lanka Ambassador in Washington. His fund raising campaign in Los Angeles had been organized by his friends in Los Angeles and Sri Lanka who had gained filthy lucre in various business deals assisted by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa using undue pressures and influence. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is indicted in Sri Lanka and facing several Court proceedings and taking Preliminary Objections in Court through his Lawyers in Sri Lanka to delay these prosecutions, without facing the Charges as a man.
