On behalf of the people of Bhutan, the King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema offered prayers at the central temple of the Tashichhodzong fortress in the capital, Thimphu, and offered a thousand butterlamps, in memory of those who lost their lives in a series of bomb attacks in Sri Lanka on Sunday.
The Prime Minister of Bhutan and government officials also joined in the prayer ceremony.
The King also sent a message of condolence to the President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, expressing solidarity of the people of Bhutan with the people of Sri Lanka.
As well as the prayer ceremony held at Tashichhodzong, His Majesty The King Commanded special prayers to be held in some of the most sacred temples of Bhutan.
His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the Cheif Abbot of Bhutan, presided over prayers at Namdroling Goenzin Monastery in Lhuentse District in the east of Bhutan. Chenrezi Moenlam, the prayers of the Boddhisattva of Compassion Avalokiteshvara, was performed in Changangkha Monastery in Thimphu and a thousand butterlamps were offered in Kyichu Temple, Paro, where Zangchoe Moenlam- prayers for the peace of the living and the deceased, was performed. In Semtokha Dzong, Thimphu, a special three-day Mithub Tongchae prayer began today, performed for the safe passage of the deceased into the afterlife.
Bhutan and Sri Lanka have close relations due to a shared spiritual heritage, and as co-members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
Bhutan sends many students to study medicine in Sri Lanka each year, and a large number of Bhutanese doctors have a special connection to Sri Lanka, having lived and studied there.
