Parliament adjourned till evening
( December 5, 2018, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to revoke an extraordinary gazette which dissolved the parliament in last month; unconfirmed sources in Presidential Secretariat Office said. However, the news is yet to be confirmed officially.
President Sirisena has ordered by an extraordinary gazette to dissolve the Parliament by calling for a fresh election. But the decision is challenged before the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the United National Party (UNP) has decided not to go ahead with the motion that was due to be debated in Parliament today calling on the President to act on the motions passed in Parliament in the past few weeks.
The motion that was to be presented today states that Parliament proposes to the President that further action be taken in terms of Article 48 (2) of the Constitution.
Speaking at the commencement of Parliament sessions today, UNP MP Mayantha Dissanayake said that they were withdrawing the motion until further notice.
Parliament will debate an adjournment motion presented by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) till 17.00 hours Colombo time.
