Sri Lankan parliamentary democracy bleeds

Who is responsible for all these chaotic situations? It all goes back to the president and to his misjudgement

by a Patriotic Lankan

( November 17, 2018, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) When I see what takes place in Sri Lankan politics, I remember arguments of one of greatest English political scientists and philosophers. John Locke (1632-1704) strongly argued that sometimes at some points the political revolution is not only a right thing to do but sometimes, it becomes an obligation. What takes places right now in Sri Lanka is an undemocratic, unconstitutional, uncivilised and uncultured method of politics. Nowhere we can see this type brutal behaviour in parliament. So, people who want to see a flourishing democracy and the rule of law in Sri Lanka must wake up this crucial time in Sri Lankan history. Mother Lanka demands from people to save it from grip of dictators and political thugs.

Today 16/11/18 is saddest day in Sri Lankan parliament history. No time in Sri Lankan parliament history we have seen a fighting like this. Some police officers and MPS of Parliament were bleeding. Mahinda cohort threw chairs at some police officers and opposition MPs. It is utterly shameful display from those MPs. They have been elected by people for people and are paid by people and yet, they behave poorly in this sacred house. What message are they going to give the world and Sri Lankan people. Do not they know they are being lively telecast locally and internationally. This gives a very bad name for Sri Lankans. This fighting took place because, Mahinda and his cohort could accept the parliamentary verdict and neither the ruling party nor opposition party is under control of Sri Lankan president. If Maithri is a man of principle and political integrity, if he is a parotitic Sri Lanka he must have resigned by now. and called for a general and presidential election. If reads all these with a sense of political responsibility and accountability he must have reigned by now. He fears that Rani and his groups will impeach him any time. That is why he has been supporting Mahinda for all this time. He is trapped in fear psychology.

Who is responsible for all these chaotic situations? It all goes back to the president and to his misjudgement. He wrongly sacked his PM, he wrongly dissolved the parliament. Now, he does not want to accept the verdict of Parliament. Once he told the UNP and its supporters to demonstrate the majority in Parliament. They did it twice and yet, Maithri is unyielding to the voice of Parliament and he insists that he does not want back Ranil as PMs. It is entirely to Parliament to choose PM and Maithri does not see it like that. He thinks that he has power to elect and dismiss any PM.

It is very much clear Maithri is suffering from fear syndrome. He fears that if Ranil comes he will be impeached, he fears if Ranil come back Maithri can not compete him in his second term. All in all, it looks one’s personal interest puts entire country into a political anarchy. This political gridlock is dangerous trend in Sri Lanka. It could create unpresidential problems in Sri Lanka. 22m people will have to pay the price for the stupidity of 225 MPS in Sri Lankan parliament.

This uncultured and uncivilized brawl took place inside parliament. It is likely this could spread outside of Parliament among supporters of UNP and SLPP. It would be wise for all parties to reconcile and come to terms with. Otherwise, this political resentment could go out of hand like a wildfire in many parts of Sri Lanka. God forbids but we should take precautionary actions. Now this country is at cross road. If we do not bring a political stability soon, this country could go back into dark days soon.

Mahinda and his cohort cannot demonstrate the majority and they do not want to concede their defeat. They must respect the voice of democracy and accept the parliamentary verdict and yet they do not want to do that. Now they use all sort of intimidation and violent threat. This is so pathetic. It is a duty of Sri Lankan judiciary and police to arrest all those who behave inhumanly in parliament.

What is the solution to this problem. The best option is to dissolve the parliament and call for both presidential and general election. I think now UNP and all their partners will get more sympathy votes. MR and cohort have lost their credibility and goodwill. Who will vote for those thugs? Who will respect those thugs now after all this?

Now, MR and Maithri fear to face any election right now. They made a political suicide by this act of violent in Parliament. I have spoken to some MR supporters in London. Many of them are unhappy with these uncultured behaviours. This brutal display and brawl in parliament did not do any good for Mahinda and Maithri. It sends an important message to public. It tells the world Sri Lanka is not under control of Mathiri. He does not have any control over his MPS in Parliament. He lost his political credibility. I do not think that he will have any chance to come back into politics. He misjudged, miscalculated and mistook all what has been going on for the last two weeks. His political weakness and ineptitude are exposed. He is politically feeble and fragile.

Now, people will teach them all a good lesson. People will teach all political thugs a good lesson. Now, Sri Lankan election commission and all parties must set some strict protocols and qualifications to those who want to contest election in Sri Lanka. Otherwise, Sri Lankan parliament will be with full of drug dealers and money laundering people.

Look how did JVP behave in parliament. We do not see any trouble from JVP MPs in Parliament. Why is it? Because they are well disciplined and well educated. They are true future political leaders of Sri Lanka. I think now is right time for Sri Lankan academics, professionals, community leaders, monks, priests and all other religious leaders to reconsider their politics and support JVP. Only party that could save Sri Lanka today.
