Sri Lanka: Rajapaksa to visit Maldives to meet Modi?

(November 12, 2018, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Installed Prime Minister of the President Maithripala Sirisena, Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa is preparing to visit Maldives on 17th to take the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to attend the inauguration of Maldives president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as the neighbours look to reset ties following the exit of a pro-Chinese government on 17 November 2018.

This will be Modi’s maiden visit to the Indian Ocean archipelago.

Rajapaksa was advanced to take this opportunity to meet Prime Minister Modi so then he may be able to clarify the situation in Colombo to maintain the goodwill relationship with the Modi Administration.

“In case if Prime Minister Modi meets him, it will be an official recognition of accepting Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka,” installed Prime Minister was advised, sources said.

President Maithripala Sirisena sacked the sitting Prime Minister Wickramasinghe by violating the Constitution in Sri Lanka and installed his choice as the Prime Minister last week of October. Then, the President dissolved the Parliament as he was unable to get the majority of the house to justify his gross violation against the constitution.

However, Rajapaksa’s trip to Male is yet to be confirmed.
