( November 29, 2018, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Parliament sessions commenced under Speaker Karu Jayasuriya a short while ago. Parliament will today take up a motion presented by the Opposition to cut off funding to the Prime Minister's office.
The United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) meanwhile, has decided to boycott Parliament sittings for the third straight day. Earlier the UPFA also boycotted this morning's Party Leaders' Meeting.
At the beginning of the session, the Speaker declared that the case currently pending in the Court of Appeal challenging the authority of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to hold the office of Prime Minister even after a No Confidence Motion was passed against him in Parliament, was not a bar for Parliament to debate the motion to cut off funding to the PM's office.
MP Wijedasa Rajapaksa has attended today's parliamentary sittings in spite of the UPFA's decision to boycott today's session.
Meanwhile, UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake, while presenting the motion to slash funds for the Prime Minister's office said that the installed Prime Minister's office has spent Rs 800 million so far for helicopter rides.
While addressing the Parliament the leader of the JVP Anura Kumara Dissanayake reaffirmed that there is nothing for their party members to discuss with President Sirisena as he is the architect of this political mess in the country. Therefore, JVP will not sit with President Sirisena for so called-dialogue, he added.
"President must prove that he is following the fundamental laws in this country as he is the guardian of protecting the constitution of the country," MP Dissanayake said.
MPs Rauff Hakeem, Bimal Ratnayake, Athuraliye Rathana Thero and Rajitha Senarathna addressed the house before the floor test.
