( November 25, 2018, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) A demonstration of Sri Lankans of all political persuasions living in UK gathered on a cold afternoon outside the Sri Lanka High Commission, Lancaster Gate, London W2 from 2 – 4 pm, 23 November 2018 in protest to voice the grievances of the diaspora on the state of affairs and the political impasse in Sri Lanka after the recent incidents in Sri Lanka Parliament.
It was organised by the JVP in UK, with support of all ethnic groups and worker participation.
A large gathering of nearly 100 Sri Lankans from a cross section of Sri Lankan political parties including Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim were represented, together with other activists assembled, in a show of solidarity against the infringement of Parliamentary rules in Sri Lanka, shouting slogans in a peaceful demonstration.
Unlike other previous protests outside the Sri Lanka High Commission, there was unanimity of opinion expressed by those present that the deteriorating situation in Sri Lanka was to the benefit of interested parties who were taking best advantage of the situation as a result of the fall in the currency exchange, the curtailment of the free flow of tourists and causing much hardship to the working people of Sri Lanka.
A petition was handed over to a representative of the High Commission at the end of this demonstration to be forwarded to the Government and also requesting all parties in Sri Lanka to observe and abide by the Constitution and not to seek gain or political advantage at the expense of the people.
A Police presence was seen at the High Commission as per diplomatic protocol, but the event was peaceful and went off without incident.
