( January 19, 2015, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that measures are afoot to recuperate the rule of law which had collapsed in this country during the last 5 years.
The Prime Minister stated this in his address to the inaugural session of the South Asian Attorney Generals’ conference that commenced in Colombo this morning.
Attorney Generals of 16 countries in South Asian, East Asian and South East Asian regions and several legal luminaries participated in this conference.
The conference was organized to mark the 130th anniversary of introducing the post of Attorney General in Sri Lanka.
The conference under the theme of “The Role of the Attorney General in the changing Asia’, was inaugurated by President Maithreepala Sirisena.
Delivering his address at the conference, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the drafting of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution has already been completed.
Earlier current Chief Justice Mohan Peries had been invited to participate in the conference as a special guest.
However Attorney General Yuvanjana Wijetilake retrieved the Chief Justice’s invitation after Sri Lanka Bar Association warned that they would shun participation if the Chief Justice is invited.
Accordingly Chief Justice Mohan Peries was absent at the inaugural conference this morning.
