( January 9, 2015, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) After a token handover of power of the state to opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at a meeting at Temple Trees, Mahinda Rajapaksa left the place voluntarily a short while ago, say common opposition sources.
While requesting Ranil Wicramasinghe to meet him at Temple Trees in the early hours of this morning, Rajapaksa, respecting the people’s dicision, thus handed over all powers of the country to Wickremesinghe. That is because his opponent Maithripala Sirisena is ahead of him at the presidential election with an unprecedented lead of more than 500,000 votes.
Meanwhile Namal Rajapaksa, elder son of the president noted, "Thank you to everyone who supported us through these years. We respect the voice of the people and Sri Lanka’s great democracy."
