( January 15, 2014, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The report of the three-member committee to investigate the November 2012, Welikada Prison riots in which 27 prisoners died, has been handed over to the Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms which indicated that the deaths have been caused by the prisoners attacking and shooting each other.
According to the committee report, following the information collected from the injured inmates and other prisoners it has been concluded that the personal revenge and lack of knowledge on weapon usage have caused it.
The 555 pages long report has been handed over to the minister by the three-member committee comprised former Justice, Bandula Atapattu, former DIG, Gunasena Thenabadu and the former District Judge, Lalith Andrahennadi.
The report has also justified deploying Special Task Force and Army in such chaotic situation, reports say.
