(January 07, 2013, London Sri Lanka Guardian) Milk is not essential!!! Understanding what the priorities are, it does not take Boolean algebra to comprehend milk is what every infant needs not to mention children, the aged and the infirm.
It came as a shock to me when I treated my neighbour’s daughter for a holiday in Bandarawela, her mother and some friends in Enderamulla who were very kind to me when I was going through a rough patch.
This girl’s husband had abandoned her and their new born daughter and it was left to her mother - my neighbour and friend - to look after both of them.
When I gave this three year old some fresh milk the mother gulped it down thinking I was not looking. I realised then this is what hunger does to people.
Although another friend, Shani Hulugalle, daughter of Haris Hulugalle of Multipak and one time chairman of Leader Publications whose husband Merill Peiris deserted her for a Tamil woman and decamped to Australia (no wonder he deserted her since she is stingy to her very bone marrow) and her two young daughters whom I invited for the millennium Christmas, managed to run away with my boyfriend of five years since he was immensely rich.
I remember when Shani bought a Kandos chocolate which her three year old daughter did not like and she sold it to Lasantha!! at the Sunday leader.
She managed to show my ex that I was not business material (for Christ’ sake I am a journalist) and that she would manage our coffee business. I am not sure whether she is still managing the coffee business since my ex would have soon realised what a scum she is. Hansa Coffee and ganja are doing well down Fife Road and Barefoot. Their front is organic food and environment.
These born again western Buddhists believe that Lord Shiva consumed ganja and attained Nibbana!!! or meditated.
Getting back to the mother of the girl I mentioned, she was struggling to make mortgage payments on her house while her siblings descended on her house with their families during festive seasons for days on end. Her husband was working in the Middle East ergo they thought she should feed them since she was the eldest.
If news items published are correct and if this government is to win elections next time round it should feed the hungry and look after the children who are our future.
The government’s future lies not in accounting for war crimes but crime against a defenceless population which are our children. Deprive them of milk and it is depriving them of their future and incapacitating their growth and nourishment which is the most appalling crime other than feeding the populace with heroin with the blessings of the Prime Minister.
Premadasa gave free milk and kola kande to school children. What does MR govt. do? Takes milk out of essential food list and encourages drug trafficking and prostitution in the name of casinos and massage parlours.
Night racing for the President’s pampered kids while children and the aged go hungry. MR must be taking lessons from North Korea and he is paving way for the UNHRC to unseat him if he carries on like he is doing with nary a thought for the island’s majority who are living below poverty line.
Victory over war has seen its sell-by date.
