The Problem of Porn

| by Crissy Moran

( December 31, 2013 - New Jersey - Sri Lanka Guardian) My heart is broken for a woman I heard about recently from a friend. She found out about her husband’s porn addiction and finally decided to talk to him about it. He told her that all men look at it several times a day and used the excuse that he’s “a man” to justify his actions. That night he packed up his belongings and left for the night while she stayed home just falling apart.

This story is so common. I remember being in her place, even when I was in porn. The men I dated were seriously addicted. I felt like I had to constantly try to be better than whatever they were looking at. It’s part of what drove me into the industry to begin with and trying to perfect myself to be what every man wanted was an endless and unfulfilling pursuit. With millions of images and videos of every genre saturating their minds I knew there was no way I could ever really compete.

Although the men I dated were not sleeping with other women they would watch them and please themselves while looking at them. When you watch porn you create a thirst that can never be quenched. The bible says if you look upon someone who is not your spouse with lust or desire, you are committing adultery. (Matthew 5:28)

If you are a believer you are not a slave to your body or your “man-ness”… you are a slave to righteousness.

This is what Paul says:

Romans 6:15-23
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Colossians 3:5
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

As a believer your body is to be offered as a living sacrifice to God, holy and pleasing. If you are allowing your sinful nature to rule over you then you are not worshipping the Creator (God) but you are worshipping Creation (yourself), which is idolatry.

The first thing you need to do to have freedom in this area is to repent to God. You must then decide to do whatever it takes to change.

Here are some steps you can take towards change:

- Ask your spouse for forgiveness.

- Bring your sin out of the darkness and into the light by confessing it to someone (James 5:16).

- Get accountability (Proverbs 27:17, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). You can download accountability software on your computers and devices from site like www.covenanteyes.com or www.xxxchurch.com.

- Part of accountability can be moving all computers in your home into places where other people can easily see it by walking by.

- Join a support group or get counseling through your local church.
