( September 9, 2013, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) TNA is expected to win the Northern Provincial Government election outright. The government too is subtly acknowledging the fait accompli. TNA is lead by the able elder statesman Rajavarothayam Sampanthan who will lay the foundation to take forward the over six decades old politico-military struggle of the Tamil people to the next stage with the northern election. Rightfully, TNA must win the election outright, thus giving the much needed mandate it needs to spearhead a campaign for political justice for the Tamil people that is being violently denied by the Sri Lankan state since independence.
The shenanigan of the deceptive government that is trying hard to bury its whole scale failures under the deceptive development projects in the Tamil areas, hoping that the Tamil masses will forget their pain and sufferings overnight and vote en masse in favour of the goons attempting to extend its hegemonic onslaught further.
The government’s campaign is spearhead by the paramilitary outfit EPDP that has not changed its colour even after the war. The leader of the EPDP Douglas Devananda is a government minister. He has been neither made to publicly handover his lethal weaponry provided by the government nor has absolved his nefarious and unlawful activities and is allowed unhindered facilities to extend the governments mission to keep the Tamils under his tab.
His ministerial office is based at 780 Maradana Road, Colombo 7, but he is operating full time from the illegally occupied Sridhar theatre in the Jaffna town without payment of rent for many years. The government has not clamped down on him to put the situation right but is on the venomous path against the popular TNA to propagate its downright hate stories.
The said minister is claiming to represent a democratic party could not find anyone other than his Sinna thamby (younger brother) K Dayananda as his Private Secretary. One could easily visualise the fate of the Tamils if Douglas Devananda is made to win at the election. It will be an endorsement of the Mahinda Chithanai of brothers, son, uncles and nephews rule for the Tamils with the relatives of Douglas Devananda and his dancing queens rolling over the politics of the Tamils.
The election campaign has already seen violence and the Election Commissioner is maintaining dumbfounded silence over the serious shooting incident in Jaffna involving the UPFA campaigners. The President’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Jaffna branch head Ankajan Ramanathan’s father Sathasivam Ramanathan is held under judicial custody over the shootout in Jaffna. Who is this Sathasivam Ramanathan? He is wildly known for his money spinning human smuggling business that had the backing of the successive governments. A multi billionaire in rupee terms, he moves around Sri Lanka with police escort. He is such an important person for the government that he is protected at tax payers’ expense. A source close to Sathasivam Ramanathan confirmed that he is provided with a pistol by the government which is strapped to his leg. The man is said to be well known for thuggery and violence that he even kidnapped his wife at gun point and forced her to marry him.
The stark choice for the Tamils is whether they want the gun trotting goons to rule them or to have their representation that will progressively win their legitimate rights by peaceful means to live with respect and honour. The goons associated with the government accuse the TNA is the extension of the LTTE by deliberately overshadowing the history that LTTE was the product of the failures of the democratic agitations of the Tamils.
The Provincial governance of the north by the TNA is not going to be an easy one. With the government favoured concurrent list and working under the shadow of the government appointed Governor is not going to be an easy one. Obstacles are plentiful as the government will do its best to pull the rugs whenever possible.
But the victory of the TNA will give a clear message to the government and will be a step in the right direction for the Tamils to progress their due place in Sri Lanka to live with respect and honour.
The Muslim leadership that has supported the successive governments for many decades are facing innermost hatred of the state machinery and the evil forces associated with it and peaks volume for participating in the centralised administration. The experience of the Muslims does not give any hope for the Tamils and the way forward is continuing with the democratic agitation and the Northern Provincial victory will give the much needed hope for the Tamils and will be an historical event post end of the war.
Winning the support of the Tamil masses is one thing and managing a provincial administration is another massive responsibility. TNA must put in place mechanisms to prevent abuse of power and corruption in its administration. Any uncontrolled issues will undermine the credibility of TNA and the right minded Tamils too will distance from the party in the future.
