"Lankan legal system in a perilous state"

( April 13, 2013, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) The International Bar Association's Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) in a report released Thursday concluded that the legal profession in Sri Lanka is in a perilous state due to the impeachment of the Chief Justice earlier this year.

The report titled "A Crisis of Legitimacy: The Impeachment of Chief Justice Bandaranayake and the Erosion of the Rule of Law" said the removal of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake "was unlawful, is undermining public confidence in the rule of law, and threatening to eviscerate the country's judiciary as an independent guarantor of constitutional rights."

The London-based institute said a high-level delegation, under the auspices of the IBAHRI, investigated the impeachment of the Chief Justice and the independence of the legal profession in Sri Lanka to prepare the report.
