( April 2, 2013, Lahore, Sri Lanka Guardian) A high profile case of a Christian Women sentenced to death on Blasphemy Charges is released on bail and is seeking Asylum at the UN Refugee Camp.
( Name not mentioned due to security reasons) A Mother of 4 daughters who was accused of blasphemy in a village in Punjab was sentenced to death by the court under the Article 295C, was sent to the Sheikhpura jail in 2009.
In Pakistan even being accused of blasphemy is equivalent to the sentence itself, this particular case sparked a wave of protests across the Country and a new debate of amending the law started.
But this led to two high profile assassinations and the case was halted as the judiciary was not willing to take the appeal at the high court against the death sentence.
The case started when the lady was picking up berries with her colleagues and an argument arose on a glass of water.
A Human Rights group LFA from Lahore, Pakistan pleaded the case at the Lahore High Court and after an effort of over a year, finally got her released on bail.
The Bail was set very high as the judiciary didnt want to be targeted by the extremist groups, fortunately LFA with the help of supporters managed to get her released and sent to the Country known as The Pearl of the Indian Ocean...
The mother along with her daughters has filed an appeal seeking Asylum in one of the Scandinavian Countries where the people supported her release. She awaits the confirmation of her status and hopes that some day the blasphemy laws which are misused in Pakistan would bring an end to the plight of the Christians in Pakistan.
An appeal has been filed against her release at the Supreme Court, which is still pending as the interim government in Pakistan is focused on the upcoming election, which will provide sufficient time for the appeal to be processed.
