( February 13, 2013, Brussels, Sri Lanka Guardian) Speaking at the National Day Reception held on 05 February 2013, on the Occasion of the 65th Aniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka, attended by the members of the Diplomatic Corp, officers of the Belgium Government and the European Institutions and the prominent personalities, held at the Hotel Radisson Blue Royal, Ambassador Amza stated that “Sri Lanka’s relations with the Europe is closely linked to over 400 years of European presence in Sri Lanka. The vibrant cultural, social, educational and livelihood affiliations that exists even to date, speaks volumes.
As sovereign nation states, we may be taking different paths to achieve same goals of good governance, social justice, equity and stability. On that account, our resolve to strengthen the existing relations and move forward remains undiminished”.
Referring to relations with Belgium, Ambassador Amza said that this year is an important milestone in the Sri Lanka-Belgium relations, as it marks the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of the Diplomatic Relations between the two countries. He further said that the 65 years of post-independence has given us a wealth of experience and challenges. We traversed through the contours of a thirty-long and difficult years, to overcome the scourge of terrorism. All that agony is behind us now. Yet, the lessons we learnt, guides us, towards making Sri Lanka a model of Asia. A society that thrives and benefits on the strength of its rich mosaic of cultural, ethnic, religious, ideological and social diversity.

The Flag Hoisting Ceremony and the Multi-Religious Observance was held at the Embassy premises on 04 February 2013. Ambassador Amza hoisted the National Flag amids Magul Bera followed by singing of National Anthem. Ven. Murngagasyaye Gnanissara Nayaka Thero, Mr. Nathan, Fr. Claude Nonis and Imam Ibrahim Boujna invoked blessings representing Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islamic faiths, respectively.
In the evening on the 4th, a Reception was held for the Sri Lankan community at the Sri Lanka Residence during which the recorded Speech delivered by H.E. the President at the National Independence Celebrations in Trincomalee was telecasted. To coincide with the National Day Celebration, a Food Festival was also organized at the Raddison Blu Royal Hotel with the participation of the three chefs from the Mt. Lavinia Hotel in Colombo.
