( January 11, 2013, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Canadian Liberal Party Leader Bob Rae yesterday expressed concern over the impeachment process against the Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Banadaranayake.
According to the media release issued by Rae, he has also asked the Canadian Foreign Ministry to raise the issue with the Common Wealth Secretary General and the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, which has the mandate to disciplining violations of the association’s basic principles,
“As a member of the Commonwealth and the designated host of the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Sri Lanka has a duty to uphold democracy and the rule of law. As they have failed to do so, Canada has an obligation to hold its government to account at the highest level.”
