Canadian Liberal Party concerned over CJ impeachment

( January 11, 2013, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Canadian Liberal Party Leader Bob Rae yesterday expressed concern over  the impeachment process against the Chief Justice Dr. Shirani  Banadaranayake.

According to the media release issued by Rae,  he has also asked the  Canadian Foreign Ministry to raise the issue with the Common Wealth  Secretary General and the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, which  has the mandate to disciplining violations of the association’s basic  principles,

“As a member of the Commonwealth and the designated host of the 2013  Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Sri Lanka has a duty to  uphold democracy and the rule of law. As they have failed to do so,  Canada has an obligation to hold its government to account at the  highest level.”
