They not only insulted CJ but the whole judiciary - Srinath Perera

( December 13, 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The impeachment motion against Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake is a keenly followed topic these days.

As a result of this impeachment motion, lawyers in many places across the country kept away from work, today as well.

Meanwhile, members of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka gathered in the Supreme Court premises  to express their protest over the manner in which the impeachment motion was examined.

The lawyers commenced yesterday's protest from opposite the Supreme Court premises.

They then engaged in a march carrying placards, criticising the impeachment process.

Thereafter, the protestors exited the court complex and continued their protest.

"The Bar Association is conducting an island-wide protest from 9 a.m. this morning to 10 a.m. against the process adopted in examining the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice,'' stated Chairman of the BASL Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa

Meanwhile, a large number of our member associations refrainedn from work yesterday.

"According to the information we have received, the process adopted by the PSC was not fair. they have exceeded their boundaries and have even insulted the Chief Justice. I urge that all this be stopped right now, and a fair inquiry be held …" stated Fmr. Chairman of the Bar Association Attorney-at-Law Ananda Wijeyasekara

"This is not a struggle against the government or the President. This is a struggle to protect an institution. We are fighting to create an independent judiciary, we will not give up this battle till we achieve victory. They have treated the Chief Justice in a very insulting manner. They not only insulted the Chief Justice by this, they insulted the whole judiciary..." stated PC Srinath Perera

"The President has said three things. One is that there is a doubt whether he can accept this report according to his conscience. The other is that a clear message has been sent to those who function in parliamentary committees based on the notion that Parliament is supreme, that it is in fact not supreme. The third is that the President has accepted that the report is flawed." added Attorney-at-Law J. C. Weliamuna
