remains of over a 100 individuals who died in the tsunami are still being kept in the Karapitiya
Hospital and the Karapitiya Medical Faculty, in the hope of being able to
identify the individuals, local media reported.
Lecturer of the Karapitiya Medical Faculty, Specialist
Judicial Medical Officer Dr. U.C.P Perera speaking to a local tv station said
that remains of 124 individuals killed in the tsunami have been kept for tests
and identification.
He said speaking to the local television station
-'Remains and complete skeletons of tsunami victims which were found in Sri
Lanka in areas surrounding the Galle district such as Thelwatta, Hikkaduwa and
Ambalangoda areas are currently kept at the Judicial Medical Unit at the
Karapitiya Medical Faculty. Investigations were carried out at the Karapitiya
Hospital. Our aim is to preserve them for a long time. The primary objective is
to provide a means of identification of these individuals if relatives come
forward to identify them.'
