( September 19, 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Despite, all the coup attempts in the last few decades in Sri Lankan political hemisphere whether they were successful or not, the next occurrence which may take place in the near future cannot be excluded so easily.
There is a common belief, among most Sri Lankans, that four main deities are protecting Sri Lanka before any disaster could cause an ultimate harm to the country and its people. Evidently all the political coups that took place in 1963, 1966 or through 1971 and 1988-89 JVP youth insurrections and Prabakaran’ s LTTE Terror assaults were abortive struggles, (thanks to our gallant Defense Forces) were struggles or coups one after the other strengthening the unsophisticated Buddhist beliefs’ in Sri Lanka.
On the other hand this “mythical” belief has served another purpose giving the corrupt ruler, the present uncrowned King of Sri Lanka, the opportunity to exploit and oppress masses ruthlessly as they knew at least this soothing belief would keep the future “revolutionists” away from the central administration. As long as the Buddhists do not want to confront the four main deities, there will be no conspiracies, coup d’état or similar uprising from Buddhist community except for minor skirmish with minority religious denominations in Sri Lanka.
Contrarily, what happened in Nepal a few years ago, in a predominantly Buddhist country is something we should ponder in the present political culture. The aim of this essay is not to analyze who was behind that conspiracy which killed whole Royal Family but to study whether this kind of coup can be staged in Sri Lanka under prevailing circumstances. For the time being, let us put aside the involvement of unseen outside forces in such conspiracies in order to shed more light to the probability of a coup attempt by an insider in the context of Sri Lankan present politics.
There are rumors that the length of Mahinda Rajapakse’s rein will last only till end of September 2012. Whether one should or could rely on what Indian and local astrologists predict, but people on the street has developed their sixth sense to feel that some sort of political calamity could take place very soon in Sri Lanka, as there are many ‘omens’ indicating in that direction.
Willingly or unwillingly, the people have come to a temporary conclusion that either they themselves or the parliamentary opposition has no chance to overthrow Mahinda Rajapaksa’s corrupt regime. Fortunately or unfortunately they live with hopes that an unseen divine force or those so-called four deities would help the desperate masses to see an end to this ruthless regime of Mahinda Rajapaksa, his crown prince and his brothers.
Dutu Gemunu was extremely religious and pious Buddhist who expected the same quality from his younger brother Saddha Tissa. If Dutu Gemunu could not defeat Elara, nobody would have spoken about his brother. Being the brother of King, Tissa was inspired to taste the kingship even before the end of his brother’s reign, like what Gotabaya, the unofficial President or the next King of Sri Lanka in waiting is now trying to enjoy. Will history repeats itself this phenomenon, in Sri Lanka after 2200 years?
The inside stories of Rajapaksa brother’s conflict at Temple Trees is now no more a secret. Chamal can be satisfied with PM’s post. Basil has earned enough money for his next few births ( if he ever be born as a human) too. But Gota’s role is yet controversial with lot of corrupt money in his position, he earned from procurements of armaments, thanks to the LTTE war, KP and his private Army Rakna Lanka.
There are cracks appearing within the close nit family of Mahinda Rajapaksa, caused by hunger for power. Gotabaya needs absolute power above anything. That is why he followed his beloved political GURU late Ranjan Wijeratne with the idea of forming a secret army in the disguised form of private security service. The members of this security organization are trained under the Defense budget and the cost charged to the GoSL and also by providing them with the weapons from the state armory. ( Read Gotabaya’s Private Army “Rakna Aracksha Lanka (RALL)."
As the people in Sri Lanka are desperately wishing that some strange occurrence could change the present political map in Sri Lanka, the son of controversial minister and his thug-friends have physically attacked an Army High ranker and his assistant on duty. Although it was a serious offense against the law of the country or challenging the rule of law, but the law enforcement officers remained silent with a blind eye as the President Mahinda Rajapaksa didn’t want to have “unnecessary” problems with his close associate since 70s. This associate, namely Mervin Silva(the thug)could open his cupboards where the Mahinda Rajapaksa ‘skeletons’ are hidden, if the police or any law enforcement institution would raise the finger against his rowdy son Malaka. Now Malaka has surrendered to the Police, will the President Mahinda Rajapaksa apply the ‘rule of law’ to prosecute him and jail him for his murderous acts.
This has created a good chance for Gotabaya to show his power to his own brother, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, how to tame wild beasts. Perhaps, Gota’s aim could be different to what people think, what Gotabaya wants to see as a clean society. Whatever it is, now the hour of truth is approaching very fast over the “Big Brother‘s” head. Taking all these factors into serious consideration, a gun of Gota’s Rakna Aracksha Lanka (RALL) could fire inside President’s tightly guarded premises.
The picture attached to this write up gives us a clear picture about what is now really taking place inside the palace. After Malaka’s incident, Mahinda Rajapaksa was strongly advised by his Chief of Security and others to wear a bullet-proof jacket. But Mahinda Rajapaksa as the President of the country does not want to let others to notice that he is now wearing this special jacket to protect him. He never wore this kind of warm cloth at home or inside his office. This jacket is itself a bullet-proof one according to very reliable sources from his security contingent. It gives an exotic look preventing others to suspect the type of jacket.
R. Premadasa was after Sai Baba and all the 33 millions of deities and people from Madras (TN) who advised him to bath him with milk poured on his head and body by virgins, to protect him from the peoples’ curse but no God could prevent Babu (or Babu’s Master Paskaralingam who planned everything behind the scene) of inflicting that deadly attack which ended not only his political career but also his life and ruined his plans for his family.
