( August 02, 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian ) Determined efforts are being made to convince the expatriate Tamils to meet the government officials and agents by the Defence Ministry of Sri Lanka.

Efforts are being made to form a core group of Diapora Tamils to counter the unsustainable pressures from the Tamils for the government internationally. Since 2008, several Tamil groups have visited Sri Lanka and met the President, several Ministers, civil and military officials. Except for few Diaspora Tamils showing the much needed solidarity with the government, most of them have turned their backs to the so far.
In the latest round of groups to visit, two Tamils from London and two from Toronto are visiting Sri Lanka. Leading of them is the Tamil Councillor of the North West London Brent Council, the Labour Councillor Kana Naheerathan who is said to have gone to Sri Lanka to meet the controversial arms procurer and Interpol listed Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP who is presently under luxury Defense Ministry custody in Sri Lanka. On 9 July 2010, Pathmanathan established the North-East Rehabilitation and Development Organization (NERDO), said to be a Non-Governmental Organization to benefit the government.
The visit by the latest team from the UK and Canada as confirmed by Councillor Kana Naheerathan to his colleagues is to procure development contracts and funding through KP’s NERDO.
According to Labour Party website Councillor Naheerathan is a practicing accountant and an elected Council Member for Queensbury Ward in the London Borough of Brent.
The latest visit comes following a call by the controversial Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse ‘to the expatriates and the Tamil Diaspora, … to rebuild the North and East as the country was now enjoying peace after the scourge of the 30-year war’ (Island 30/6). The news further stated as him saying that ‘Distrust has torn us apart, but leave aside that factor and believe in each other’
According to the associates of Councillor Naheerathan, the very same Brent Council has served its Councillor with a demolition notice recently for not following the rules and constructing unauthorised structures in is his residential property situated within the Council perimeters.
