( August 14, 2012, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) There are many countries in the world , which have suffered due to war and then forged ahead strongly, inspite of the ravages created by the war. Of course, immediate example is Germany, which suffered heavily at the last stage of 2nd world war and thereafter have now emerged as the strongest economy in the world with several achievements to its credit. There is no reason why Sri Lanka would not achieve such growth after the unfortunate ethnic conflicts, since it has the natural wealth and geographical advantages.
It is primarily the responsibility of the government to build trust in the country and secure cooperation from the other political parties. The government should recognize the right of the opposition political parties to dissent , instead of thinking that any disagreement and dissent is an act of confrontation. The arrest of Fonseka was a wrong step that has created bitterness and in the process affected the climate of amity and growth.
It is never too late for the government to recognise the importance of fostering healthy political climate in the country , that can be achieved by showing genuine good will to everyone including the political opponents. Certainly, the people would appreciate such gestures of the government, that would put enormous pressure on the opposition political parties to respond positively to the moves of the government. The ball is clearly in the court of the Sri Lankan government.
There is realization everywhere that Sri Lankan government is trying hard to undo the damages caused to the section of the population of the country , due to the recent ethnic conflicts. Those who suffered during the period of conflict are now looking forward to positive and proactive development plans from the government, that would create opportunities for them to improve their life conditions and lead life as respectable citizens. The President of Sri Lanka should use concillatory tone in dealing with the affected Tamils with understanding and compassion and try his level best to create confidence in their minds about the positive intentions of the
Sri Lankan government. He should not only do so but should also appear to do so.
This task can not be delayed , as very urgent steps are required to restore development of the affected areas, since no country can progress with section of the population remaining distraught and dis spirited .
Sri Lanka’s enormous potentials to set up industrial projects using mineral resources, herbal projects and agro chemical projects require very careful and long term development plans. There are also enormous opportunities to organize research programmes in variety of fields such as biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals and build up universities of global standards.
The international help will come in a big way for such programmes, since
Sri Lanka has all the appropriate elements for growth. All that is required is that the Government of Sri Lanka should be able to identify the opportunities and create an atmosphere where productive and constructive work can be carried out , with international competitiveness.
The investors around the world and many global research bodies are now wondering whether Sri Lanka government would be able to rise up to the challenges and opportunities.
