(10 July, 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) These are the photographs of people’s livelihood in poverty in the ‘ Ceylon Government Railway Grounds’, Katugoda, Galle.

People who live in illegal constructions pay monthly rent for various people.
Muttayiya Velu is a 71 years old man who pays for his thatched house Rs.600/= every month. A 80 years old woman called Kachan Sitti who bought this illegal construction, 15 years ago, for Rs.25,000/=. There are no sanitary facilities like toilets etc. and even water was not supplied for these houses; The people who live here, do not have permanent jobs; some live as beggars and some engage in prostitution for their survival. It was said that some children in these houses attend to schools while working in houses as labourers. During general or other elections, for the last several decades, politicians have a habit of making promises for new houses and other benefits, but they all became mere words and only timely promises.
