( June 11, 2012, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) Momentum was building up to strengthen the campaign against President Mahinda Rajapakse’s visit to London to participate in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Protesters euphoria reached the peak when the President’s Special address at the Commonwealth Economic Forum organized by the Commonwealth Business Council and the City of London was cancelled.
Some of the angry protesters went to the extent of buying eggs in the Harrow area to throw at the President when he proceeded to the lunch hosted by the Queen. Knowing the scale of the tension prevailing amongst the agitated demonstrators, the Metropolitan Police worked towards avoiding President being targeted by the demonstrators. The Sri Lankan flag tied to his car was removed and additional security was provided to the President.
Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa was jeered by protesters as he arrived and few eggs landed behind his vehicle as he proceeded. One demonstrating source said they had taken some used slippers to throw at the President if circumstances permitted.
