( May 10, 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Cases of child abuse and rape of women have increased steadily over the past decade with at least 6343 rape cases and 15,158 child abuses cases been reported, Child Development and Women Affairs Deputy Minister M.L.A.M. Hisbuslla told Parliament today.
Responding to a question raised by UNP Kurunegala District MP Dayasiri Jayasekera, the Deputy Minister said during the last five years girl child rape cases increased as 799 cases in 206, 805 cases in 2007, 914 cases in 2008, 922 cases in 2009, 1089 cases in 2010 and 1169 cases in 2011.
The number of juvenile marriages and juvenile pregnancies too has seen an increase during the last five years. The number of juvenile marriages reported in 2008 was only six but it had increased to 14 over a period of three years in 2011. These figures are only from the cases reported to the ministry.
Lowering the standards of education had been identified as the main reason for the increase of rapes and child abuses. Among other reasons are insecurity of children, popularity of the usage of mobile phones with internet facilities among the youth, emergence of mentally imbalanced people due to use of cocaine and alcohol, increase of sexual misbehavior within sub-culture that has become prominent in the garment industrial sector and existence of a wrong impression among children and youth in the society about the low level of education on sex.
