( April 18, 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Several employees attached to Sri Lanka's National Museum have been suspended from work over last month's burglary at the museum.
National Heritage Minister Dr. Jagath Balasuriya has said that seven employees including a security person have been suspended from work.
The museum employees have been suspended allegedly for failing to properly carry out their duties, which has paved the way for the theft.
The police are continuing investigations into the robbery. However, no arrests have been made yet.
A committee appointed by the National Heritage Ministry to inquire into the robbery is expected to hand over the report this week.
The section of the museum where the robbery took place which has been closed since the theft is to be re-opened from April 25th.
Museum authorities have also taken measures to install a new state-of-the-art alarm and CCTV system in the museum before the section is opened to the public.
According to the museum authorities the burglars have stolen gold plated short swords, gold coins, silver coins, bejeweled gold ring , gem-encrusted walking stick, gold waist belt and a silver sword among others.
