(October 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The blatantly open manner in which the President’s brother, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the second most important person in the government, has clearly demonstrated his close association with the man who, in broad daylight, ordered the shooting which ended in the deaths of four persons, including a long-standing and respected member of the ruling party, Baratha Lakhman Premachandra, is nothing less than scandalous. The fact that this same man, Duminda Silva is publicly known to be involved in the drug trade and has been accused of rape makes the situation worse. That the man has been identified as a leader of underground groups makes it even more scandalous. Where respect matters in politics no one, politician or otherwise, would dare to have any links to such a person. But, things have changed so much in Sri Lanka that scandals no longer seem to matter. Certainly not to President Rajapaksa and his brother Gotabaya.
In any country a man who is responsible for the deaths of four persons due to his orders, would treated as the worst type of criminal and be condemned. Take any of the incidents in which a gunman has targeted others whether in the United States or Europe. Social condemnation in such situations is severe and instant. No politician will show any sympathy to such a person. All join in the chorus of the condemnation of such a person whose conduct is seen as mean and dangerous to society.
How have things come to this stage in Sri Lanka, where a despicable criminal is treated as a hero by country’s top leaders?
