| Statement by the Ceylon Communist Party – Maoist (CCP-M) 

(September 28, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian)  Although the CCP-M has irreconcilable ideological and theoretical differences with the New Left Front, we fully endorse the candidacy of Com. Bahu for the Dehiwela-Mt Lavinia Urban Council, and urge all progressive forces to vote for him. Com. Bahu has consistently stood in the frontlines of the struggle to defend democracy and freedom, with the defense of the liberation struggle of the Tamil nation as a core principle.

Sri Lanka is being engulfed by a deepening organic crisis and the solution being rigorously pursued by the Mahinda Rajapakse Regime and the Capitalist State is to entrench a quasi military-fascist / chauvinist-hegemonic, Comprador Dictatorship. As Lenin stated, “ Everywhere, in whatever form, the Capitalist State represents, in essence, the naked terrorist dictatorship of the bourgeoisie”. This dictatorship was set up during the war to liquidate the LTTE, and along with it, the Tamil national liberation struggle- as it had existed. This open terrorist dictatorship was characterized by genocidal massacres, abductions and extra-legal killings, inhuman torture and intimidation, combined with wholesale corruption amounting to billions. This process is now being further entrenched by the consolidation of a highly centralized, militarized, unitary State propped up by the imposition of Sinhala-Buddhist ideological hegemony, under the command of the Rajapakse dynasty. This agenda and program is underpinned by the liquidation of the political status of the Tamil nation and the permanent military occupation of the North. The recent phenomenon of ‘grease devils’ has served to terrorize the masses and extend military control over the whole island.

The path to the so-called “Miracle of Asia” is a development process characterized by the dominance of lucrative Mega Projects and sale of land, public property and natural resources to foreign Capital, which allow for wholesale bribery and corruption. This is while peasant agriculture, irrigation, education and health, and other basic life lines of the masses are left to rot and perish. The ‘miracle’ is to be achieved by the offer of the cheapest labor power of the workers to robber barons and opening up the country to casinos, bars and brothels, in the name of attracting tourism. The social, economic, cultural and ecological devastation of this path of development is incalculable.

The regime and ruling classes know they are facing a mounting threat from the masses, as the cost of living, rampant corruption and abuse of power become intolerable. This is even as the halo of the ‘conqueror and liberator’ has begun to evaporate. However, it is clear that the Parliamentary Opposition has capitulated to the ruling agenda and the oppressed masses have been deprived of leadership. At this decisive conjuncture, it is crucial that revolutionary-democratic forces such as Com. Bahu be empowered to raise the collective voice of democracy and freedom. It would be a step forwards in building mass resistance to this path of development and to work towards the overthrow of this military-fascist, chauvinist-hegemonic, Comprador-Capitalist Dictatorship and establish a People’s Democratic State in the form of the People’s Republic of Lanka. A vote for Com. Bahu will provide a powerful voice of resistance in the defense of democracy and freedom, in a most important forum such as the Dehiwela-Mt Lavinia Urban Council, at a most decisive stage in our political future.
