Arrack made with artificial toddy booms in North & East

Govt. loses millions, crooks reap billions alleges Harry

(September 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Non-invoiced arrack made out of artificial toddy and illegally imported spirits is being sold in the North and East of the country depriving the state of a revenue, Mr. Harry Jayawardena, Chairman/CEO of the Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka has charged in the company’s annual report.

He accused the Department of Excise of aiding and abetting such sales.

"When the war ended, all the licenses that were suspended during the war were re-opened and the business that was carried out by the LTTE during the war has now been taken over by the new licensees who have started business in the North & East with non-invoiced arrack made out of artificial toddy," Jayawardena alleged.

He said that it was unfortunate that some distilleries are illegally producing coconut spirits made out of artificial toddy "which has become a massive undercover business for unlicensed toddy contractors and the relevant department is turning a Nelsonian Eye to this operation."

"The toddy is transported from the Western Province to the South passing many checkpoints in broad daylight. This leaves room for consumers to drink poisonous arrack made out of artificial toddy," Jayawardena said

"Whilst the government is losing millions in revenue, unscrupulous contractors are making billions by making coconut spirits available to suspecting consumers."
