If Police could behave in this criminal manner against an elected Member to the Parliament by voting in a General Election, and representing the voice of his million voters, we can very clearly understand as to how the rest of the law enforcement authorities of the government would behave against specially an ordinary citizen of Sri Lanka"

(August 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Palitha Kumara Thevarapperuma, 51 years old married with 02 children, is a Member of Parliament representing voters of Kalutara District. On 02.08.2011, he made written complaints to Human Rights Commission, Inspector General of Police, the National Police Commission and to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kalutara.
He requests to protect him from harassments made by Mathugama Police who violated his fundamental rights. According to his statement, the Mathugama Police attempted several times to fabricate charges on him and continuously harassing. The police made illegal interferences and compelling him to withdraw a Fundamental Rights Case filled by a voter from his area named K. A. Piyadasa. On 15.10.2010, K.A. Piyadasa was arrested by Udaya Kumara, the HQI of Mathugama Police and was brutally tortured. Piyadasa filled a fundamental rights case, bearing number SC/FR/629/10, before the Supreme Court against the brutality of Matugama Police. Now the police by forcing M.P. Thevarapperuma illegally attempts to influence Piyadasa to withdraw the case.
Another allegation made by Mr.Thevarapperuma against the Matugama Police was of confiscating cash Rs.135000, a flasher light worth of Rs.12000, a Nokia Mobile Phone with sim card bearing number 0775510520 and his very precious identity card issued only for Parliament Members.
Mr Thevarapperuma appeal to relevant authorities to take legal and discipilionary actions against Matugama Police HQI, Udaya Kumara, IP Jayasingha, and IP Senanayaka and put an end to their continuous harassments. He also asked to release the Toyota Cab vehicle bearing number WPC 11 6906 which is also seized by the police. Further, he requests to withdraw false allegations against him.
This entire story reveals to us as to how extremely lawlessness prevails in this country.
