Her visit will be a record breaking event as no Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers have visited Sri Lanka post independence of India. (June 15, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa must undertake a fact finding mission to Sri Lanka with the blessing of the Central government to meet the war ravaged Tamil people who are yearning for justice and freedom from oppression of the military state of Sri Lanka.
Her visit will be a record breaking event as no Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers have visited Sri Lanka post independence of India. Her visit must be independent from the state military/intelligence control and she must speak to the real victims who have lost their dear ones in the war and assess the ground reality of post war Sri Lanka for the Tamils.
The chances of Sri Lanka refusing permission for the Chief Minister’s visit are very high and it will be the case with the government of India. Any adverse reaction will signify the plight of the Tamils who are circumstantially dehumanised by the ravages of the war under the regimentation of the massive defence presence and the paramilitary rule.
If the President Rajapakse & Co., can visit all over the world to campaign against war crimes charges why cannot the Chief Minister undertake a fact finding mission to Sri Lanka and meet the cross section of the Tamil people in the island nation?
Though Indian constitution prevents federal states involving in foreign policy matters, what is at stake here is a situation needing fair assessment by a leader who had advocated her stand against the LTTE and stood firm on the rights of the innocent Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
Any visit with the backing of Delhi will be a right move, and will help evolve a just solution to the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
