(March 13, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Canadian based members of the Peoples Liberation Organisation Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) met the Deputy High Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Mission Karunaratne Paranawitharane on 6 March 2011 and discussed several issues affecting the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
In the three hours of meeting, PLOTE members expressed their strong displeasure on the issue of container loads of materials deliberately held at the Colombo port sent by their members to the victims of the war.
They had despatched clothes, books, toys, wheelers for the disabled victims bought in China, crutches and many other essential items in 2009 and these have been held at the port and their effort to release them has been denied by the officials.
They questioned how the Tamils can take the government’s appeal for the diaspora Tamils to participate in the development work seriously when such double standards are deliberately practiced by the officials.
The Deputy High Commissioner said there must have been mishandling of the issue and assured the members that action will be taken to release the goods to reach affected people.
