(March 22, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) Over 150 determined Tamils are marching to Delhi to raise the profile of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. Beyond divisive political mechanisation, what these men doing by walking with their big hearts for miles must be praised and saluted.
They may be branded as anti-LTTE, anti-social, pro-India ENDLF by the conditioned mindsets that cannot see beyond limits and solidify with them for their very worthy democratic agitation of walking from Chennai to Delhi for over 2500 kilometres.
What the ENDLF doing is something beyond belief having given up the arms struggle and dedicating them to an orderly democratic agitation in the land of Mahatma Gandhi to win justice and political rights for the Tamil people is a commendable task.
I am saddened when groups belonging to flag waving Tamil protesters in the west are shying away from showing their public solidarity with the effort. Such conditioned attitudes must be roundly rejected by the Tamil people like how they rejected the demonstration organised against Sonia Gandhi in London.
The Chennai to Delhi marchers are expected to reach Delhi on 24 March 2011. Hundreds of marchers will be submitting their memorandum in Delhi demanding for the full implementation of Indo-Lanka Accord and the removal of all planned Sinhala colonisations in the north and east of Sri Lanka.
Their minimum demand for the resolution to the conflict as a starting point is a step in the right direction. Let Tamils in Sri Lanka lay the foundation at the grass root level to strengthen their stake in the country without subscribing to the unachievable targets that only helps the marauders to extend their agenda to cause further harm to the suffering people.
What Tamil people want is to live with self respect without any intimidation and insecurity from the majority dictates. The foundation for the beleaguered people can only be built from what is there already and by broadening the demands to address the current needs. Self governance without intimidations and manipulations with the withdrawal of the army to the barracks and broader agenda of accountability paying a major part in the Sri Lankan polity must be the basic that should be achieved.
ENDLF’s demands though it lacks the pluses above the thirteenth amendment that are needed for a broader resolution is still the right demand and a demand that is made in the heart of the very power that help bring about the one and only resolution to the conflict in the over sixty years of conflict between the majority rule and minority discontent in the country.
