(February 05, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) According to statistical revelation of Government Agent of Jaffna Mrs Imelda Sugumar, there was unprecedented abuse against women in Jaffna until 31 December 2010.
According to her report, there were 54 sexual abuses against women and 247 pregnancies of under aged (under 18) girls in Jaffna.
She revealed 14 couples are living unmarried. Thirteen women attempted to commit suicide and one died in the attempt.
959 persons have lost their parents due to the war. Three have been kidnapped or missing. 264 persons are psychologically affected and 288 have been abandoned by the parents.
According to her 227 are in need of urgent assistance.
At the news conference held at the GA’s office, it was claimed that the adverse situation had arisen as a result of fragmentation of the social structures due to the war.
