(January 21, Washington DC, Sri Lanka Guardian) President Rajapakse and his 22 trusted members’ entourage arrived in Houston from Colombo via Dubai. First Lady Shiranthi Rajapakse, eldest son Namal Rajapakse ( connected in Dubai from Libiya) accompanying the President. The private visit is considered very confidential medical reasons. The Emirate airline accommodated the entourage.
The flight from Dubai to Houston was a Non Stop flight, on EK213, with flight duration of 16 hours. Sleeper beds are available on the Boeing 777 flights a state of the art new aircraft operated by Emirates.
It departed at 2.45 PM from Dubai and arrived the next day at 9.05 AM at Houston. The flight was on time.
President’s cousin and Ambassador to the US Jaliya Wickramasuriya was not available to receive him and his family in Texas, as he was away in Mexico on a previously arranged trip.
President’s trip was planned suddenly, and there was no time to rearrange Ambassador Jaliya Wickramasuriya’s to trip to Mexico. However, the President needs good doctors and not tea traders on this private trip!
As some in Colombo have got into various spin modes, speculating that the State Department had summoned the President for questioning, and that UN Secretary General’s Panel would be having a friendly conversation with him on their War Crimes investigations, which are both incorrect.
Since President Rajapakse helped UN SG Ban Ki Moon win his election to the position by sabotaging the formidable Sri Lankan Sinhala diplomat Jayatha Dhanapala, and foreign minister Tyrone Fernando from the UNP, UN SG is ever so grateful to all the Rajapakses and therefore protecting them from any kind of investigations.
