(January 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The External Affairs Minister of India S M Krishna visited Sri Lanka at the end of November 2010. On his return from the visit, he informed the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Muthuvelu Karunanithy that ‘Sri Lankan Government would resettle most of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) before the end of the year’.
He confirmed that ‘currently, the number of IDP’s was around 16,000 to 17,000 in the camps and that India’s substantial assistance for resettlement of IDP’s and the rehabilitation of northern and eastern Sri Lanka has been greatly appreciated by the people of the region’.
The deadline of December 31, 2010 has passed and both the Governments of Sri Lanka and India are maintaining silence over the number of IDP’s resettled at the year end.
According to media reports IDP’s are still remaining in the camps and facing further difficulties with the authorities. One sketchy report stated school going IDP’s are made to sing the national anthem in Sinhala language in schools.
It is unclear how many of the 16,000 to 17,000 IDP’s have been resettled. The main print media of Colombo too is maintaining dumfounded silence on this issue.
