Atrocities in the military occupied north.

Incident 1


(December 08, Jaffna, Sri Lanka Guardian) Arokiam Thavapiragasam (age 41), a private bus driver was manhandled by a group of Navy personnel on December 5, 2010.

He was attacked at Isaimalaththalvu in Murungan when he was proceeding from Madhu with 30odd passengers. The passengers went to the rescue of the driver when he was attacked. He was admitted to the Mannar General Hospital with severe physical injuries.

According to the testimony of the driver: ‘I was proceeding from Madhu Maatha church with 30 odd passengers towards Mannar. At the point of Isaimalaththalvu in Murungan, the Navy truck was seen coming behind the bus. About 5 Navy personnel assaulted me for not giving away for the Navy truck to overtake.’

Incident 2

At the Puttur junction in Chavakachcheri, the army shot and killed a civilian. The incident took place on December 3 at 4.30pm.

The victim is said to be a mentally disturbed person. Despite knowing his mental status he was teased by the army. The victim unable cope with the pressure, started to attack the vehicles parked with a metal rod. This resulted in an argument between the people and the army.

To control the mentally disturbed person, the army opened fire. The mentally disturbed person was killed instantly. His body was taken to the Jaffna General Hospital mortuary.
