Sanitizing and elevating Kudu Mervin - Shaming Sri Lanka

(November 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) If there was one issue in which Sri Lankans across the many divides in their plural society agree, it must be in the unanimous condemnation of one nationally despised and who seems to enjoy being called Kudu Mervin. He absolutely has no compunction in being identified with known drug-traffickers, extortionists, kidnappers and the like - to whom he openly functions as Godfather. Worse, he is identified with the new "business" of land-house thieving where expensive houses and bare land in residential areas of absentee owners area forcibly taken. In many causes using forged and false legal documentation using delinquent lawyers and judges. It is whispered the many millions that are involved in these shocking transactions are shared with the high and the mighty.

In that recent fiasco where the Police lost face when they foolishly
raided the Welikada Prisons "in search of kudu" the prisoners mercilessly attacked the Police and sent them back shouting "if you are really looking for Kudu stocks and dealers go to Kudu raja Mervin's home" is a message ordinary people took a note of cursing the government that enthrones drug-traffickers to positions of power and trust. The question in the lips of everyone is why is the regime tolerating such a base and despicable scoundrel. .

When he was bathed in paint and women's urine at a TV station while the whole nation was watching there was wild cheering. Almost everyone had smiles on their faces - an indication of public disgust by which people view this much hated man. Neither the Police nor the government came to the protection of several employees of the TV station identified in tapes against whom this savage set his criminals to bodily harm - at their homes, on their way to work and within the TV station premises itself. Many were stabbed, badly beaten or injured by the use of sharp weapons. He shocked the nation when he tied a government official to a tree in the national gaze of TV. And when the issue turned against him, he had absolutely no shame in denying he was involved. True to his lying nature he said the official tied himself. Following a tremendous public outcry the political leadership did the right thing and dismissed him from his ministerial duties going to the extent of removing him from the list of party membership. Many ministers and MPs went to the Chief seeking the man be banished and the reputation of the Party and government restored. The country applauded the government when he was sacked. They were relieved one of the most dangerous and undesirable men in Parliament has been duly tamed. There were some who believed this whole drama was a charade and the dreg will be restored to his position soon. To the alarm of the entire country the man is elevated to a position where people are forced to bow to this Garu Amathithuma.
If the message of the regime to the people is "you go about criticising us and we will continue to do what we want. We will appoint and promote anyone we want"
there is very little the people can do. But as we all know there is an end to everything. And when the pendulum swings back the character and integrity of this regime will be defined by such sickening appointments.

The nation awaits the next scandal by a manimal (combination of animal+man)
who will once again make all of us bow our heads in shame.
