President promises "era of development" in second term

(November 19, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) President Mahinda Rajapaksa was sworn in for a second term in office this morning in a colorful but simple ceremony opposite the Galle Face Green in Colombo.

The President was sworn in before Chief Justice Asoka De Silva at the auspicious time of 10.16 a.m flanked by Mrs.Shiranthi Rajapaksa and his three sons.

Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and Bhutanese Prime Minister Lyonchhen Jigmi Thinley were among the foreign delegates who attended the ceremony. Members, Members of Parliament and Ambassadors were also among the invitees.

In his address to the nation, the President said that he would usher in an era of development in his second term in office after having successfully eradicated the threat of separatism in the country during his first term.

“Where there is peace there is development, where there is development there is peace,” the President said.

He said the Government has already set in motion major development projects and once impoverished areas in the country were now waking to a brighter dawn.

The President also said he places the future of the country in the hands of the youth in whom he has great faith.

“The youth joined the army in their hundreds and liberated the country from terrorism and now they must come forward and develop the country,” he added. Tell a Friend
