Intoxicated journalism of Pearl Thevasagayam must end

"Everything that is said in her writings so far is falsehood and harangue, that she has become a blatant accuser and a person of venomous, insinuating and utterly confused state of mind."

by Rajasingham Jayadevan

(November 14, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) In the write up ‘Kassipu and personality disorder: two vital ingredients of a gutter journalist’ in the Sri Lanka Guardian, the writer Pearl Thevasagayam without responding to her scurrilous charges against me in her previous writing, has gone on the spree to attack the wider Tamil Diaspora community. Having claimed asylum in the United Kingdom recently on the grounds of persecution of journalists in Sri Lanka, the writer had gone on to castigate her fellow asylum seekers in the UK as unscrupulous persons.

Issues relating to the criminality and social failures of a section of the Tamil Diaspora population are part and parcel of the degeneration that came about with the three decades old war inflicted on our people in Sri Lanka.

Having been the head of the Tamil Refugee Action Group, later the Tamil Community Housing Association and with my extensive socio-political engagement, I can authoritatively speak for this vulnerable section of the Tamil people for whom there are no adequate community support structures to cater for their absolute needs. Trivialising their status based on sensationalised news reporting in the mass media and clobbering their difficulties as the overall status of the Tamil Diaspora community is not acceptable.

Pearl Thevasagayam, in one of her writing recently, referring to the news of the killing of the transgender lawyer, took exception for blaming the Tamils for the killing by a Tamil in the Kingscross underground station. She exposed her feeling standing on moral high grounds that stigmatising the Tamils for the singular killing is unacceptable. She soon forgotten to apply the same principle to the wider fraud and criminality in the British society and has gone on her stigmatised castigation of the Tamil community as frauds which present a small percentage of the overall crimes.

It must be borne in mind in the democratic culture of Britain; the Tamils too have the freedom to do whatever, so long as they obey the laws of the land. Without substantiating, blatantly accusing that TGTE of human trafficking appears to be the never ending vitriolic mission of the writer.

Pearl Thevasagayam states: ‘I would not hesitate to challenge Ms Sukumar if indeed as Mr Jayadevan alleges she wilfully ignored regular procedures in tenders or she consorted with politicians for her own betterment’. What Pearl Thevasagayam fails to understand is, the Jaffna Government Agent Imelda Sugumar’s mere silence on the issues of public knowledge of regularities, put her in an awkward position, as the head of the civil administration of Jaffna. She must take the full responsibility as the head and we cannot sit and wait to see whether she indeed did it ‘for her own benefit’, as failure to take control of the administration itself is a breakdown that she is fully responsible.

The same principle applies to President Mahinda Rajapakse as well. We all know he did not go with the sub-machine gun or a rocket propelled gun and shoot and kill the white flag carrying surrendering LTTE men and women. As the head of the state, constitutionally empowered as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, he is responsible for the misdeeds of his subordinates. In responsible governances, such callous incidences will lead to resignations, but Sri Lanka is special and it will sweep the skeletons under the carpet and will carry on as good and accountable with its hide and seek policies practiced.

Pearl Thevasagayam also admits: ‘I confess that my personality disorder started when the war ended’. I suggest, she go for due medical attention, without ranting and raving thus reflecting her disorder in the media which is not helpful and only will compound her predicament further. There are over one thousand Tamil medical doctors practicing in the NHS in diverse medial fields and a suitable one can be easily found if approached.

Everything that is said in her writings so far is falsehood and harangue, that she has become a blatant accuser and a person of venomous, insinuating and utterly confused state of mind. In her latest writing, she attempts to portray herself as a Guru to teach me the use of English words. Such belittling attitude of her pompous mindset only reflects her inability to engage in mature journalism and debate.

I can only tell the confused and the ego-centric self appointed Guru, the meaning of the word Viraginous is not ‘vitriolic’, and it is Virago which has two meanings and the literal meaning applies on this occasion. She may not find the meaning in the English dictionaries or the Thesaurus but if she needs my prompting, I can direct her to the appropriate source if she contacts me privately through the editor of the Sri Lanka Guardian. I also take this opportunity to advice her to carryout a basic spell check before passing her gutter writings to the media.

With her confused state of mind, I hope, she will understand the meaning of ‘every action will have its reactions and that every reaction will have its counter reaction’. I hope she will mitigate her confused state of mind without embroiling in unwanted emotional outbursts any further.

I wish her well. Tell a Friend
