He was arrested shortly after he led a delegation to meet with UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya, General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka and UNP MP Ruwan Wijewardena at the Sirikotha. Premaratna was arrested by policemen in uniform outside Sirikotha.
Earlier in the day Cinnamon garden Police sought an arrest warrant on Premaratna, but court said that any person responsible for violence at the universities could be arrested.
