REPLY TO THE SRI LANKA DAILY NEWS, A STATE OWN DAILY.
We without any fear state to Sagarika and the Daily News- the nauseating tail wagers of the blood thirsty regime of Sri Lanka, that we will not go to any extent to whitewash the truth and burry the skeletons under the carpet like they do.
(October 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The October 22, 2010 edition of the Sri Lanka Daily News carried a toxic piece of writing by Sagarika Rajakarunanayake, the wife of the controversial and corrupt, Lucian Rajakarunayake - media co-coordinator (English) for the President Dr (Lumumba University) Percy Mahendra Rajapakse.
Lucian represent a section of the media that has sold itself for personal gains from the government, thus espousing the cause of ‘seen no evil, heard no evil and will not speak about the evil’ attitude.
Lucian’s wife Sagarika too has joined the gravy train, with the expectation that one day the couple will be offered a lucrative diplomatic post like a retired judge, military and media men receiving overseas posts for obediently discharging their duties as demanded by their master.
The write up titled ‘Blatant lies by Sri Lanka Guardian’ by Sagarika Rajakarunayake in the Daily News start with the breast beating cry of ‘Lies, Lies, damned lies’ whilst being amply intoxicated with the benefits that accrue with the head bowing service to her master, the President Mahendra Percy Rajapakse.
The use of language to discredit our publication must be countered in an equal and proportionate manner that will expose the unscrupulous and the sickening legacy of the rudimentary patriotism that the writer and the state managed Daily News are practicing.
Lucian Rajakarunayake has gone through a stage of being publicly exposed over a scandal a decade ago and when his credibility of engaging in the honest media was lost, he went on the honeymoon with the government that gave him enough succour to build his ego mission to justify the repulsive conduct of the government.
His wife plays her subservient role to him by writing in the most distasteful media in Sri Lanka –the ‘Daily News’ that never in its history stood by the side of the people and for their justice, but only promoted the government’s bloody minded and corrupt causes. This newspaper on its own had never exposed the violation of human rights of individuals and always had given the cover for the impunity enjoyers.
On October 9, 2010 we published an editorial titled ‘From grassing the dogs to human gassing in Sri Lanka’. This insight write up was branded as LTTE propaganda and the writer of the state funded Daily News charging that ‘the SLG well known as a propaganda arm of the LTTE has made yet another attempt to blacken the image of Sri Lanka by targeting its human rights record’.
How the blackened images of Sri Lanka can be further blackened when it is already black? It could be that, Daily News is trying to white wash the image by its scurrilous and irresponsible writings and targeting the SLG must be part of its age old agendum to satisfy its masters.
Let us tell the skulk writer who can be only accommodated in a newspaper that survives on the pain and suffering of the people and the animals that we do not carry the mantle or slogans of anyone as claimed by her or her sycophantic media outlet.
We too are the victim of the arrogance of the state against the media and our role is to give a forum to reflect the diverse views that cannot be published in the constrained rule of law in Sri Lanka that nurtures the Daily News. Unlike the Daily News, we have a broader shoulder. If Rajakaunayake’s present to us their writings without taking an ego centric compromising stance, we shall definitely publish them wholeheartedly.
Definitely, SLG will not act as a mouthpiece of the government, until justice is provided on thousands of merciless killings including that of the Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickramatunge and many other journalists.
We will even speak for the dogs in the streets without fear or remorse.
Unlike the Daily News, even if the human rights of the LTTE is violated, we will expose them and if Sagarika Rajakaunayake wants, she too can contribute so long as she subscribe to our mission of upholding truth, reconciliation, justice, accountability, fair-play, transparency, responsibility, culpability, good governance, non hero worshiping culture, anti-bribery and corruption, respect our minorities with empowerment, honest dealings etc., etc.
Sri Lanka Guardian is not a forum for Sinhala or Tamil extremisms. It is the heart of the pained ones and reflects the real feelings of the people who have suffered in the hands of the decades old rule by the moronic monsters.
Sagarika Rajakarunanayake goes on to claim without naming she represents a body. She states: ‘We, as animal welfare organizations are infuriated by the fact that the SLG, running out of material to fabricate propaganda material has turned to concocting stories of cruelty and brutality inflicted on animals by state authorities, which treatment, according to the SLG is to be extended to the LTTE suspects in the North’. Even dying dogs in the streets of Colombo will not give any sympathy to her fabricated breast beating.
Emotionally charged Sagarika claims further: ‘The SLG dares to lie openly, talking about the appalling and brutal seizing and gassing of dogs supposedly carried out even now by the Colombo Municipality, The truth is that the gassing of dogs ended in 2003, and the strategy of seizing and killing dogs introduced to us by the British colonial rulers was stopped by a directive issued by President Rajapaksa in May 2006. In November 2009 a national stamp bearing the picture of a community dog was issued to commemorate the "No Kill" policy introduced by the President. This pro-LTTE lying machine even professes to show concern for Buddhist principles in order to paint a false picture of Sri Lanka, stating that despite being a Buddhist state, it is carrying out the inhumane practice of brutally seizing and gassing dogs. The President has acted on the Buddha's principle of compassion to all beings in stopping the wanton killing of dogs as required by the British Raj. We deplore the lies put out by the SLG and hope it would in future stop concocting stories about animals for their false propaganda.’
We without any fear state to Sagarika and the Daily News- the nauseating tail wagers of the blood thirsty regime of Sri Lanka, that we will not go to any extent to whitewash the truth and burry the skeletons under the carpet like they do.
We reproduce an appeal by Care2 herein. The date of the plea (24/5/2007) contradicts with Sagarika’s claim that ‘gassing of dogs ended in 2003’ and ‘the strategy of seizing and killing dogs introduced to us by the British colonial rulers was stopped by a directive issued by President Rajapaksa in May 2006’. She can visit the website and read the passionate comments by the readers which are no different to what we have stated in our editorial. We assert that the precepts of Buddha dharma is being violated so brazenly in Sri Lanka even the five sensed dogs are not spared.
If Sagarika Rajakarunanayake wish to enlighten her concocted mind about gassing the dogs, she can also visit the Sunday Observer article published on August 01, 2010 at www.sundayobserver.lk/2010/08/01/fea19.asp. This article is a testimony that gassing of dogs is still practiced in Sri Lanka. How will Daily News accept human gassing, when it is unable to accept the fact that poor dogs are brazenly executed in the gas chambers?
In their concluding remarks, the Care2 states: "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated"
Let's help Sri Lanka become a great nation by helping them to treat their animals with dignity and respect!!!
EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR THE SRI LANKAN DOGS
Death and animal suffering in Sri Lanka
24th May 2007
Imagine a place where puppies are placed in gas chambers or have their eyes pecked out by crows on a rubbish tip. A place where dogs are beaten, doused with fuel, mutilated, stoned, scalded with boiling water or stabbed with pole syringes carrying strychnine. A place where pet dogs spend their entire lives tethered outside, often with rope embedded in the necks, or imprisoned in small cages until they die. Imagine a place where cattle are pick-axed to death, many giving birth during the carnage, whist others facing the same brutal fate, watch and wait in silence for their turn. This horror of all horrors is the daily reality for the animals of Sri Lanka.
As well as humans, the strays also have to contend with blood parasite diseases caused by ticks and mosquitos-Filaria, Ehrlichiosis and Babesia. They have no hope of being blood tested or treated. They have no hope of being treated when they are injured on the roads and can survive for days howling in agony by the roadside with fractured spines and maggot infested wounds. No-one will help them, and many locals stone injured and disabled animals.
Animal SOS Sri Lanka is a newly formed organisation which will soon be a registered charity. We offer the only hope for the animals of Sri Lanka, a country where animal welfare is non existent. The vision is Kim Cooling's, a former nurse and Social Worker, who has worked tirelessly with her friend Morag Longmuir to save as many strays as they can and to highlight the terrible plight of animals in Sri Lanka. Kim and Morag receive no outside funding and work full time to pay for their rescue work during their holidays. Kim's work is widely respected in Sri Lanka and articles about her endeavours have been reported in national newspapers in Sri Lanka as well as the UK Lanka Times here in the UK.
Our aims are-
To purchase some land and build a well equipped veterinary clinic for the strays who are suffering and dying by the roadside. Our British trained Veterinary nurse will manage the clinic and many British vets have offered to assist us with the sterilisation programme. We will also employ a resident Sri Lankan vet and other local staff to care for the animals.
To initiate a humane canine control programme through sterilization.
To initiate a vaccination programme.
To initiate an education programme aiming at the younger generations to change the cycle of inherent cruelty, indifference and ignorance that prevails and compounds the animals suffering.
To have an adoption scheme for puppies who are dumped on garbage tips or in the road. Many pups have their eyes pecked out by the crows.
To have a refuge for some disabled dogs who are often stoned and scalded by locals.
To lobby the government to bring about effective legislation to protect all animals from the terrible suffering they presently endure.
We estimate that we will require around £65,000-£75,000 for the land and building works, and our annual running costs will be around £30,000. To date we have less than £1000, and we have donated some of this ourselves to qualify for charity status.
Sadly, the large wealthy charities with their own agendas get all the funds. The small hands on groups making the greatest difference, struggle to survive.
We urgently require funds to make this vision possible. It really is the only hope for Sri Lanka's animals. We also require a celebrity to act as our Patron, which will raise the profile of our organisation.
Please, please help us.
Lavinia-Rescued from street in Colombo in an emaciated state. She was stoned by locals. She required -3 months veterinary treatment in Sri Lanka for a massive TVT, (underwent vaginal repair, spay) Ehrlichiosis, filaria, mange. Lavinia now lives with Kim in London….
Sid staggered over to Kim and Morag from nowhere and collapsed at their feet. He had been badly beaten and his front legs broken. He was take to the vets, and Sid's chances of survival were slim. He was suffering from a high count of filaria, emaciation, mange, and endured 10 weeks chemotherapy for a large TVT on his genitals. He survived and is the most courageous boy. Sid lives with Kim in London. They adore one another. Sid is disabled due to his fractured legs, but loves his life as a pampered western pooch.
Sooby used to hide from the gas vans when they visited the Mount Lavinia area near Colombo. All the other dogs in the area were taken to the infamous dog pounds and gassed. Sooby had her tail hacked off by locals for fun, and Kim and Morag decided to get her out of the country to ensure she had a life. She is best friends with Sid and lives with Kim in London.
More rescued dogs from Sri Lanka-The lucky ones-pups found in the road.
EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR THE SRI LANKAN DOGS.......
SDGA have received this emergency appeal from Kim Cooling, in our opinion a marvellous lady who performs miracles to alleviate the suffering of Sri Lankan dogs with her friend Morag. We would like to help them by putting out this important appeal to everyone so they can receive donations to set up a clinic for the dogs and an education programme for the people of Sri Lanka to improve animal welfare which is so desperately needed out there.
Kim and Morag have dedicated their lives to these animals and they use their own personal funds to re-home these dogs and pay for all their veterinary treatment. They are angels and we want to put them in touch with other angels out there who can help and assist them in their most valuable work for the animals.
All of us make the difference in this world and previous experience has shown us that when like minded people club together, miracles can happen!!!
If you think you can help to make a difference to Kim and Morag and the animals of Sri Lanka please contact Kim now. All donations and homes offered for these dogs will be gratefully received. Contact Kim on Tel - 07773 746108 or Coolingkim@aol.com
Thank you for your much needed support.
