Carnival Cruise Line Hotel Director Drama – Former Club O2 Director Wants Crew Treated “Right” - Writes to Miami Office
(October 05, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) I was a former employee of Carnival Imagination as a Club O2 director from December 10th 2009 to February 19th 2010. I resigned from the company based on medical reasons and my disappointment with onboard management. I however, wanted to resign silently and return home merely citing health reasons. Meanwhile, I was given a questionnaire on issues related to my resignation on 15th. In that resignation questionnaire, I was asked the reasons to resign. Thus I noted about a major issue at Carnival Imagination, the lack of communication between higher-level management and the ground level staff. I was summoned to the office of Hotel Director Mr. Zijad Harcevic at 5pm on 16th of February 2010.
I expected this discussion to be cordial and professional. However, I was verbally harassed by Hotel Director who unleashed a personal attack on my character combined with indirect threats for my comments in the questionnaire. This was especially remarkable as I was never formally introduced to the Hotel Director and this was the first meeting I had with Mr. Zijad Harcevic. I found his verbal assault offensive, derogatory and unjust.
I do recognize that the position of Hotel Director requires him to act firm and decisive. But I do not deem that he has any rights to yell at or to make any unwarranted verbal harassments at any resigning employees.
In addition, I also failed to comprehend the point of conducting a questionnaire if the Hotel Director is unable to respect my observations productively without taking it personally.
I never had any discipline issues onboard Carnival Imagination for the two and half months. I had over 90% average rating on Club O2 onboard from guests. Although I never plan to return back to Carnival Cruise Lines, I would like to seek justice to prevail and my fellow staff/crew members be treated fairly. Many staff members also informed me that it is a common occurrence onboard to intimidate and cower foreign staff/ crewmembers from giving constructive criticism of higher management onboard. This effectively prevents fair feedback reaching your office in Miami.
If a free and fair internal investigation is conducted, I am positive that many staff and crew members will avouch for this unfortunate situation onboard Carnival Imagination. Many people however opt to remain silent due to fears of reprisals. From my personal experience, I never felt comfortable actively approaching any higher administration officials due to the fear of reprisals.
Considering most crew/staff members are from third world countries, the cost of constructive feedback is very high for the regular employee onboard.
This is the sad state of being onboard Carnival Imagination.
Please note that the aim of my efforts is not to harm your company but to ensure that my fellow onboard team members are treated justly. I feel that the Carnival Cruise Lines being the largest cruise line in the world has an obligation to respect and protect its employees who work hard day and night onboard without their families and friends to make Carnival Cruise Lines a major success.
I do not seek any personal benefits from this situation but I would humbly like to request a written apology from Hotel Director of Carnival M/S Imagination for his offensive comments and unruly conduct on February 16th, 2010. I would also like to request a written assurance that he would not treat his employees in such highhanded manner in future.
Finally in a positive note, despite the negativity from certain officials, I must commend the outstanding efforts of Chief Security Officer, Crew Training Center Officials, Environmental Officer, Staff Captain, Chief Safety Officer and Captain who are positive, professional and visible among staff and crew at all times. M/S Carnival Imagination is fortunate to have such competent officers onboard.
Best wishes,
A former Club O2 Director
Carnival M/S Imagination
