(October 30, Paris, Sri Lanka Guardian) International branches of Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front – Pathmanaba EPRLF – held its regional party conference on the 23rd of October 2010 in Paris.
Delegates from the UK, France, Germany and Switzerland took part in this conference. Representatives from the Canadian branch of the EPRLF could not attend but sent a detailed report and their proposals for the conference.
One of the senior Leaders and former Chief Minister of the North- East Province Mr Varatharajaperumal came from Sri Lanka to participate in the conference.
Representatives from the four international branches submitted comprehensive reports about the political situation in their host countries and proposals for a working program. Following this there were discussions, and resolutions were adopted by the conference about the political directions of the party and the working program amongst the Sri Lankan diaspora.
In his key note speech to the conference, Mr Varatharajaperumal elaborated the immense sufferings of the people and the prevailing unbearable conditions of the most vulnerable sections of our society. He also expressed relief that the war has ended providing a much wanted democratic space and pointed out that if the war had continued it would have only brought more deaths and destruction. He further said that since the diaspora Tamils constitutes almost one third of the total Tamil population of the Northern and Eastern provinces, , they have a crucial role in rebuilding the lives of those in Sri Lanka. He also warned that the continuation of the destructive politics of the past will only help to further marginalise the Tamils in Sri Lanka. He called upon the diaspora Tamils to be appreciative of the political realities and act responsibly in defining an achievable political solution.
In the final session of the conference EPRLF declared that:
•EPRLF will endeavour to strengthen the democratic space and build unity amongst the various parties of the Tamil speaking people.
•EPRLF will strive to build a strong, united democratic Sri Lanka and would extend its cooperation to achieve this objective. It rejects the nihilist separatist politics of the extremist sections in the Tamil polity.
•EPRLF appeals to the Government of Sri Lanka to hasten the process of finding a reasonable, acceptable and durable political solution by engaging the democratic Tamil polity. It believes that is paramount to the peace, progress and economic prosperity of all the communities of Sri Lanka.
•EPRLF rejects the divisive, sectarian Tamil politics of the past and would promote an approach to strengthen the links and communication between all communities of Sri Lanka in order to create a greater understanding.
