(September 25, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) This is the right opportunity to compare both the President Mahinda Rajapakse and the LTTE’s supremo Late Velupillai Pirabakaran. The readers will find the sums adding up for both equally. The bygone Pirabakaran is only an emotion espousing celebrations of the victorious at present. It is Mihinda Rajapakse who is going to decide the destiny of his and the nation of Sri Lanka. The indicator is clicking on very fast and is very worrying indeed.

VP became the leader of the arms struggle of the Tamils on the bedrock of the systematic campaign of the governments of Sri Lanka to marginalise the Tamils and in particular following the introduction of the standardisation policy in the early 1970’s to scale down the Tamil entry to the universities and the 1977 nationwide anti-Tamil violence. Pirabakaran violently outmanoeuvred the other Tamil militant groups and established himself as the kingmaker of the Tamils.

MR became the leader with the help of Pirabakaran when Piraba went against Ranil Wickramasinghe in the 2005 Presidential election. Having won the President’s election with the slimmest margin, Mahinda Rajapakse consolidated his power base and got re-elected with increased majority after eliminating the LTTE outright at a heavy cost of the lives of the Tamil civilian population.

VP fought for right of self determination of the Tamil people and mainly empowered his village men from Vallvettithurai and neighbouring Myliddy to take forward the struggle. He was grooming his son Charles to succeed him.

MR campaigned to finish off the LTTE to raise the pride of the Sinhalese. He too is promoting his southern most Hambantoda for excessive development and is empowering his son Namal and his brothers, nephews, uncles, aunties to rule the country.

VP did not believe in democracy and transparency and thrived on secrecy and military dictatorship. He prevented or violently manipulated the Tamils to exercise their voting rights.

He tampered with the voting in the elections and brought upon him more powers under the 18th amendment to further fiddle the electoral process.

VP relied on his military and intelligence service for his survival.

MR too is promoting the military and intelligence service for his survival.

VP killed his successful military man Mahataya after imprisoning him for some years to consolidate his authority.

MR is preparing to kill his one time Army General in the prison cell, who gave him the outright victory over the LTTE.

VP brutally killed his own people for his political survival.

MR too killed many people to consolidate his power base.

VP led his struggle by killing many political leaders including Rajiv Gandhi.

MR has killed thousands of Sinhalese and Tamils to consolidate his power base. Most damning of the killing was that of Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickramatunge.

VP never accounted for the deaths and destruction of many thousands of Sri Lankans.

MR too is presiding over deaths and destruction of thousands of Sri Lankans by arrogantly resisting accountability.

VP never trusted the educated Tamils.

MR gets exceptional thrill from the goons like Mervyn Silva, Wimal Weerawanse etc., than the educated.

VP destroyed the Tamil society.

>MR progressing to destroy the Sri Lankan society.

VP forcefully collected funds from the Tamil people.

MR & Co., are thriving on the 10% - 15% commissions on the government contract awarded to private contractors

VP and his family members ultimately faced the violent deaths.

MR is in the early stage of the game and what will befall only history of Sri Lanka will tell.

Conclusion: MR is proving to be a master manipulator. He is succeeding in keeping India and the west at a bay.
