MOON DECLARED PANEL HAS NO RIGHTS TO INVESTIGATATE

(September 27, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The government owned newspaper the Silumina reported yesterday Secretary General of the United Nation Ban kin Moon had declared in the meeting with Sri Lanka President Rajapake at the UN head quarters that "there are no powers to conduct an investigation on Sri Lanka by the panel that is appointed by me," Furthermore Secretary General said that he appointed the panel to get advices on the post war situation in Sri Lanka and that he is happy about the post war reconciliation effort of the country.

The newspaper further states, the Secretary General had wished the President for winning the last few elections and also for gaining two thirds majority in the parliament and had related this as good for political reforms.

On June 22, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed a panel of experts to advise him on accountability issues relating to alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian laws during the final stages of the conflict in Sri Lanka that ended last year.

According the UN statement, " It will be available as a resource to Sri Lankan authorities should they wish to avail themselves of its expertise in implementing the commitment. In the conduct of its mandate, the panel hopes to cooperate with concerned officials in Sri Lanka.” Tell a Friend
