"What is needed in Kashmir is that people with high moral fibre of Gandhian standards from India should be asked to proceed to Kashmir and engage the separatists and the youth for discussions , that would promote understanding and good will."

(September 13, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) It is unfortunate that the unrest in Kashmir has now become an explosive issue, with innocent lives being lost.
What is distressing is that the Government of India gives an impression that it is clueless and immobile in dealing with the protesters in Kashmir and is unable to create the climate of confidence that is required to restore peace in Kashmir. The Government of India seem to be responding to the problem by simply imposing curfew and trying to suppress the agitation , calling the agitators as separatists inspired by external enemies. The history has repeatedly revealed that no unrest and agitation have been defeated by use of force. The immediate example that we have in India is that how the mighty British government had to bow to the demand for freedom in India, finding that its armed force were not equal to the peaceful agitators.
What is needed in Kashmir is that people with high moral fibre of Gandhian standards from India should be asked to proceed to Kashmir and engage the separatists and the youth for discussions , that would promote understanding and good will. In today’s condition , the politician in the country cannot do this.
It is not in the interest of those living in Kashmir to go away from India. With all its faults , India is a free country where there is freedom of speech and deep rooted democratic spirit which is prevalent only in a few countries today. The youth in Kashmir should have good look around them and realize that when they would move away from India, they would be stepping into the clutches of countries , where freedom would be the first casualty.
The Government of India should realize that it has to respond to the challenge in Kashmir with great sense of wisdom, foresight and understanding. It should draw the lessons from the quality of leadership that Mahatma Gandhi gave to the country where genuine love and compassion and truth in approach were the hall mark.
