What is Bar Association to do there?

(August 21, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The president of the bar association Shibly Aziz, is going to make a speech to the supreme court in a contempt of court case. There is lot of curiosity as to why he is there and what he is going to say.

Is he appearing to support the Attorney General and to say, Yes, Yes, this man is guilty? Well, why does AG need some one else to do it?
Or is he going to say, No, No , this man is not guilty? Well, there is a defense lawyer to do that.

What is Bar Association to do there?

Is he going to say, what the Bar Association has officially said in the past, that there is no Contempt of Court in the country, there need to be one in fairness to anyone that is going to charged.

Is he there as “Friend of Court” to explain matters about the law? That is not a role for the Bar Association. That is a role for a senior lawyer , in his personal capacity, if the court invites him to do that.

But what is the Bar Association’s role in this case? Many lawyers we inquired from were unable to answer and several did not want to comment at all.

This appears as an Alice in the Wonderland type of a situation.
