Recent killing of the Ruhuna University Student is a sheer evidence of where the dictator is heading.
Statement by the Democratic Youth Front
(July 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) We, the Democratic Youth Front of Sri Lanka vehemently condemn the recent atrocities of the Sri Lanka Police against the students of Ruhuna University.
A student of the University of Ruhuna, assaulted by the police near the university hostel on the 18th and admitted to hospital, died today (23rd) morning.
Susantha Aruna Bandara of Lunawa at Buttala, a third year student of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences of the University of Ruhuna had been in a group of students who had agitated on the 18th against an incident that had taken place on the 17th when thugs from outside had broken into the university premises and assaulted students. The students had been demanding more security to the university. However, the administration had decided to close down the university. The police had brutally assaulted the students when they had gone to their hostels to remove their belongings. Susantha Anura Bandara was injured in this brutal police attack.
Due to an injury he received on his head he was admitted to Buttala Hospital from where he had been transferred to Bandarawela Hospital. Later he had been admitted to Kotalawala Intensive Care Unit and after four days he was transferred back to Bandarawela Hospital where he died.
Sri Lanka police forces showed such atrocities towards the youth and the civilians during the recent pasts with the blessings of the President’s Mahinda Rajapakshe’s government.
Twin killings at Angulana, Moratuwa, day light killing of a disable Tamil youth at Bambalapitiya beach (in front of the thousands of witnesses) and killing of the grandfather of a young custodian at the Kiribathgoda Police showing where they are heading. Members of the civil organizations, religious leaders and the opposition whips repetitively requested investigations against these incidents and the maximum penalty against those who are responsible for these crimes.
Neither the Sri Lanka Police nor the Government failed to carryout proper investigations and take any actions against those who are responsible for the incidents. Now the killing is a habit of the Sri Lankan Police forces and they are getting the maximum cover and the blessings from the government to do so.
Government and the higher education minister already laid plans to ends the free education system established over here in near future and trying to lower the quality of it by letting bogus degree mills to setup their operations in this country. They have already requested number of such degree mills to setup their operations over here. However their sons and daughters will enjoy the free education at these universities while other paying millions of money to the racketeers coming from other countries. This would lead the selected individuals to enjoy the every luxury of this society while other struggles to secure their bread and butter.
Throughout the history, Sri Lankan university students were there to voice against such moves. They won many battles in similar nature and were there to secure the rights of education and the rights of expressions of the civil society. Fearing an uprising against their moves, Rajapakshe’s regime is trying to nullify the voice of University Students by unleashing waves of atrocities against them.
Abolishing of the free education system would affect millions of students coming from rural areas. Only the selected individuals at upper middle class and above would get a chance to pursue their education up to university level. It would be a clear evidence of how the Mahinda Rajapkshe’s so called people’s regime is suppressing the civil rights and DEMOCRACY in this country.
We as a political movement vehemently condemn these moves of the Mahinda Rajapakshe’s government and would be there to educate the youth, organize them and fight to win back the DEMOCRACY on behalf the people of Democratic Socialists Republic of Sri Lanka.
Thus requesting the brothers and sisters of mother Sri Lanka to join with us to save the mother Sri Lanka from the dictatorship and make it a true pearl of Indian Ocean!
