Threat of forces being used to thwart General’s victory: Somawansa

(January 19, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) A situation has arisen where the armed forces could be used to thwart General Fonseka from winning the presidential election, says Somawansa Amarasinghe, leader of the Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). “We see this as a real threat,” he said.

Addressing the media after meeting the Mahanayake Thero of the Malwathu Chapter and the chief incumbent of the Gatambe Rajopanarama the Venerable Keppettipola Siriwimala, the JVP leader said that the president has brought the country to a state where the chiefs of the armed forces are giving instructions on how to vote at the elections.

“We are talking about political interferences because the president has already involved the three armed forces and the police in political work.

“The president had brought this country to a state where for the first time in its history the three armed forces and their leaders state how votes should be cast.

“We can reveal this dangerous state of affairs and we are in the process of doing so. This is an appalling and dangerous situation. Therefore, they may use the power of the armed forces to prevent the victory of Sarath Fonseka. We see this as a real threat,” said Somawansa.
